Packing for Kilimanjaro

Temperatures range from warm and humid in the forest to below freezing near the summit. Layering makes it easier to adapt as conditions change.

Clothing

Consider packing:

      • Moisture-wicking base layers
      • Warm mid-layers, such as fleece or insulated jackets
      • A waterproof, wind-resistant outer shell
      • Trekking trousers and waterproof over-trousers
      • Warm hat, sun hat, and gloves
      • Several pairs of hiking socks
      • A warm insulated jacket for camp and summit night

Footwear and equipment

You’ll generally need well-broken-in hiking boots, camp shoes, a daypack, a headlamp with spare batteries, trekking poles, sunglasses, and sun protection. A sleeping bag rated for cold conditions and a sleeping mat are also commonly required, though some operators provide rental equipment.

Health and personal items

Bring personal medication, basic blister-care supplies, sunscreen, lip balm, and any items recommended by your healthcare provider. Pack important items in waterproof bags, as rain and condensation can affect clothing and electronics.

Ask your operator for a current packing list. Requirements differ depending on the operator, equipment included, season, and porterage arrangements.
